WorpDrive WordPress Backup: A few common pre-signup questions

By 29th November 2012 January 14th, 2016 iControlWP: Manage WordPress Better, WorpDrive

WorpDrive: Automated WordPress BackupYesterday we launched WorpDrive WordPress Backup to the public, on our iControlWP platform.

So far so great!

It turns out lots of people have been waiting for its release and the response we’ve received has been positive and a little overwhelming.

Here are some of the most common questions we’ve had…

1. What is the space limit on WorpDrive for 1 site?

There is no space limit for WorpDrive.

One WorpDrive license provides 1GB storage space. If you exceed this space, the system will automatically increment your WorpDrive licenses by 1, thereby adding an extra 1GB space.

2. Can I share my disk space between sites if one has more than 1GB and one has less.

Yes. The total disk quota in WorpDrive is shared. So if you have 3 WorpDrive licenses, you have a total of 3GB backup space that can be used by those 3 websites.

3. What technology does WorpDrive use? How does it work?

WorpDrive uses lots of different technology, and a lot of in-house custom-built software to run.  It doesn’t use any WordPress code to do what it does.

It’s fundamentally a combination of FTP and SVN.

WorpDrive creates a replica of your website, and does a dump of your WordPress database. Then it adds all this to a new SVN repository.

4. How long does WorpDrive activation take?  It seems to take a long time…

This is expected. WorpDrive activation is dependent on 2 main factors:

  1. How big your site is. The bigger it is, the longer it will take to replicate and then add to the respository.
  2. Where your site is in the queue. We have a first-in-first-out activation queue as we don’t want to overload our infrastructure. Your site will be processed when it’s next up in the queue.

5. How long would backups take if activation takes a long time?

Backups are only capturing the changes and should happen relatively very quickly.

6. Is iControlWP included with WorpDrive, or the other way about?

No. Think of iControlWP as the platform upon which you manage all your WordPress sites in one place.

Then consider WorpDrive as the website backup component of your management tasks.

At the moment, you must have iControlWP to use WorpDrive… that will probably change in the future.

You do however get a free iControlWP license with each WorpDrive licenses.
